Coinbase has received approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to operate a derivatives clearinghouse in the United States, marking a significant expansion of the exchange's regulated financial infrastructure, according to a report by Cointelegraph.
The approval positions Coinbase alongside rival Kraken as one of the few major crypto exchanges to bring US derivatives clearing operations in-house. Kraken's parent company moved in a similar direction in May, when it acquired Bitnomial — a firm that held a CFTC-regulated exchange, clearinghouse, and brokerage — consolidating that regulatory footprint under one roof.
